Marvel: 5 things we must see from the MCU’s Cyclops
By Mark Lynch
Tall and Slim
If you’re wondering why the Slim is a proper noun, it’s because it’s his nickname. He’s been called Scott “Slim” Summers since the beginning – because he’s actually slim. No matter how old he gets, it’s like he’s never going to put on any weight. It’s become his look.
Cyclops would look weird if he was too muscular. James Marsden was the perfect size and build to play Cyclops, while Tye Sheridan was arguably too short for the visual. Going forward, it would behoove Marvel Studios to go with a taller and slimmer Scott Summers. One of the reasons why John Krasinski is a popular choice with fans is that he fits the build to perfection. He looks exactly like the character in the comic books.
When Cyclops is cast, hopefully it’ll be someone over six feet tall with a lean build.
Show his optic blast’s real power
We haven’t seen Cyclops use his optic blast to its full potential. Not even close. He’s used it for precision on a few occasions like target practice and at the end of the 2000 X-Men movie. What we haven’t seen is him really cut loose.
In Astonishing X-Men, Cyclops, Wolverine, and Colossus were being attacked by a Sentinel. Cyclops told his teammates to get behind him because he wanted it off his lawn. He took his glasses off and all we see is a giant panel of red. Wolverine and Colossus looked on in amazement and Logan says, “Every now and then, Summers, I remember why you’re still in charge.”
Cyclops’ optic blasts are more powerful than we’ve seen in the movies. This needs to be displayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t have already had a moment where we sat in awe of what he just did. Marvel Studios, however, does a fantastic job making sure each character has a moment to shine. This writer fully expects this to be the case when Cyclops debuts.
