Why The Batman will be a crime thriller unlike anything we’ve ever seen before
The origins of the villains of Gotham
Batman will undoubtedly have his hands full with a few villains. The villains aren’t just thrown into the film. There is a connective tissue to be explored.
While this isn’t an origin story for the Dark Knight, it is for a couple of rouges in his gallery, according to Reeves.
"“I guess the one thing about the Rogues Gallery is that it actually in a weird way, is the origins of a lot of our Rogues gallery… so that’s all incredibly exciting.”"
Zoe Kravitz plays a Selina Kyle who hasn’t yet become the spandex-wearing, whip-wielding, anti-hero we know and love. Instead, she’s a cat burglar who catches the attention of Gotham’s Caped Crusader. We’re hoping in more ways than one. Speaking of more, no matter what happens in the movie, we hope to see Kravitz’s Catwoman get a spin-off series or film of her own.
Then there’s the Penguin. Thanks to the trailer we got a glimpse at Collin Farrell, who looks unrecognizable as the evildoer. This iteration of Oswald Cobblepot isn’t the kingpin of the criminal underground, and he hates being called Penguin.
Even with those two roaming the streets, another villain grabs the attention of Gotham PD and Batman. Reeves promised this film would highlight Bruce Wayne/Batman the World’s Greatest Detective. And Reeves doubled down on that during DC FanDome.
"“[The Batman] is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime. It’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”"
What better way to highlight Batman’s detective skills than to have an antagonist whose crimes forces him to solve riddles?
The Riddler is coming into his own, and it’s safe to say he’s the primary focus of the film.
