These are the two most important parts of Wade Wilson’s life. It’s sad that the most influential things in his life are those that traumatized him. What’s worse is that, without them, he wouldn’t have become a hero, the universe may not have been saved, and who knows what other things would have happened.

After Wade got cancer, he was experimented on. After he didn’t develop power, he was deemed a failure and flushed to another section where he was tortured. After finding out one of the names of his torturers (Ajax), he antagonized him relentlessly. After all of this, the odds of Wade dying sooner increased in the Dead Pool. Eventually, Wade had a decision to make: He could die during one of his torture sessions and be with his beloved Death, or fight and lose her forever. Wade fought, killing everyone in the facility – and, thus, Deadpool was born.

There are a lot of different versions of Deadpool’s origin and none of them are a happy beginning for Wade. His mother died when he was young, his father abused him (in one origin, he killed them both) and he got cancer. Throughout all of that, Wade manages to see the bright side in life. He will complain, he will hate things, but he’ll still find a way to smile. And for 30 years, he’s made us smile as well. Raise a chimichanga to the Merc with a Mouth. Here’s to thirty more years.
