3. Sam speaks to Isaiah Bradley
Since the introduction of Isaiah Bradley in the second episode of the series, Marvel made it known that they were not afraid to tackle issues of racism and prejudice, which is especially prominent throughout Sam’s arc in the series. This leads to the character returning to speak with Bradley after retrieving Steve’s shield.
Sam discusses Bradley’s time in prison and the possibility of him telling his story to the world, however the former soldier wishes to stay dead in the eyes of the government. This conversation also adds to Sam’s self-doubt about the role Steve entrusted him with, as Bradley believes that the world would not accept a Black Captain America. He also adds that no “self-respecting black man” would take on the mantle, making Sam consider his options.
This conversation is important, and while Bradley wanted to push Sam away from taking up the mantle of Captain America, it also seems that this conversation is important in swaying him towards taking up the role.
Sam realises how important it is for a Black man to take up the mantle of Captain America and his conversation with Bradley makes it abundantly clear that he needs to take on the role in order to make sure the injustice that Bradley suffered never happens again.
