Best DC movies and shows on HBO Max: Superman: Red Son
The DCEU got a lot of people excited when it gave audiences a glimpse of an alternate reality Batman witnessed in the first nightmare sequence in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and fans got even more excited at how that ordeal continued in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It will be interesting to see if future titles venture there, but for now, fans looking for some solid variant takes should check out the amazing animated feature Superman: Red Son.
Based on the Mark Millar comic book series of the same name from 2003, the film follows the origin story of Superman accept this time around, he lands in the Soviet Union, and we see him in 1946 running from bullies out of fear of how badly he can hurt them.
The Elseworld’s take follows a much different version of the rivalry between the two superpowers, the US and the Soviet Union, with the alternate man of steel having to deal with a murderous Batman who grew up in the slums oppressed by the regime, the treacherous patriot Lex Luther, and the super-intelligent alien being Brainiac.
The movie has a solid rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received mostly positive reviews from its critics. Superman: Red Son is a well-crafted adaptation of the well-received source material, and if the powers that be wanted to add this flick to the schedule instead of a DCEU one, no one would be mad.
