Greatest comic book characters – 30. James Gordon
First comic book appearance: Detective Comics No. 27
James Gordon was the only thing stopping the Gotham Police Department from becoming nothing but corrupt cops. There are those like Renee Montoya and Harvey Bullock that follow the rules, but they couldn’t do it alone. Gordon was constantly doing everything he could to keep the police force as clean as possible. He’s the reason Bullock and Montoya are who they are today.
Gordon is a man of ethics. Especially with Batman. There have been many occasions when Bats has stepped over the line. When that happens, Gordon reminds batman that he operates in Gotham as a courtesy. He’s also been the first person to turn himself in when things look bad for him (see Batman Eternal for more details on this). Showing that he isn’t above the law either.
Greatest comic book characters – 29. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
First comic book appearance: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Since The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made their comic book debut in 1984, they’ve been insanely popular. They’ve spawned multiple cartoons, movies, and video games. Their evolution in pop culture has helped keep their popularity in comic books.
It’s interesting when people read the source material and see who they truly are in the comics. Each of them resembles the movies and shows, but they’re better fighters, characters, and much darker. This writer suggests picking up an issue and finding out for yourself. People may attribute Iron Man, Batman (1989), and Spider-Man for making comic book projects popular. Let’s not forget that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helped pave the way as well.
