7. What If… Captain Carter was the First Avenger?

“What If… Captain Carter was the First Avenger?” was a great way to set up the What If…? show because it is the one that deviates the least from the original storyline. While it is a major switch to have Peggy Carter take the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, the events of the rest of the episode play out in a similar fashion to those of Captain America: The First Avenger.

The rest of the episodes were giving us major overhauls to the stories we were very accustomed to, so it was a smart move by Marvel to have the “safest” of the stories debut first. It allowed fans to ease their way into the series without receiving too much of the shell shock that was eventually going to come later on.

6. What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?

One of the best parts about this episode of What If…? is the fact it allowed us some more time with one of the best villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Killmonger. And this episode also allows us to see Killmonger was more than just a great fighter, he was an extremely intelligent strategist as well.

While we did see some of Killmonger’s cleverness in Black Panther, we didn’t get it to the same degree we saw in this episode of What If…? Killmonger spends this entire episode three and four steps ahead of everyone in the show allowing him to achieve his goals of becoming the next Black Panther and eventually using the resources of Wakanda to assert its place as the most powerful country in the world.

The only issue with the episode, and a problem with many of the episodes, is there is so much story and exposition to pack into each episode it can be a lot to take in and comprehend. And with Killmonger having to outwit so many people in such a short time, it makes the people he is outsmarting come across as dull which was never the case in the MCU.
