2. Understanding the characters

When it comes to comic book movies and TV shows, the characters don’t need to be exactly like the source material. Sometimes, they can be the exact opposite and that’s still okay.Even if you take a character and make them the antithesis of what they are in the comics, an understanding of the character is still necessary.

Look at Injustice. Superman and Wonder Woman are nothing like their counterparts, yet it works. In the case of Wonder Woman, that’s down to the fact that the writers knew what to switch up to make Diana Prince’s altered personality make sense. The first man Wonder Woman met was still Stephen Trevor – except in this case, he was a Nazi. Trevor wasn’t a compassionate man because he was loyal to a deplorable person. That changed the way she looked at people from then on. Only someone who gets Wonder Woman could turn her into a despot and have it make sense.

People say that the problem with the DCEU is that the creative team changes the characters, but every comic book project ever created does that in some way or another. No one gets it 100% accurate and they shouldn’t. Some parts of a character don’t translate well out of comics. But, if you understand the character, minor and extreme shifts can be made.
