Avatar sequels

It would be unfair to say that Avatar: The Way of Water isn’t succeeding at the box office, because it is – it really is. The long-awaited sequel has made half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office already and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. However, this success doesn’t account for the huge amount of pressure it is under to succeed.

With a gigantic budget of around $400 million, the movie may have already made that money back in its first week of release, but it has a lot more to make if it wants to get those much-discussed sequels made. In fact, even director James Cameron acknowledged that it would need to be one of the highest-grossing movies of all time for it to break even.

Now, that’s still entirely possible at this point, but whether or not it can sustain its momentum remains to be seen. If it can’t, we may not see Avatar 3 or Avatar 4 come to life on the screen. Granted, most of 3 is filmed, but whether or not the studio will want to risk its release will all come down to how The Way of Water performs long-term.
