20. Father Gabriel

Father Gabriel is still alive, although he probably shouldn’t be at this point. Even though Father Gabriel has managed to redeem himself to the residents of Alexandria for several seasons, he was one of the most unlikable characters in the group. He was not trustworthy and seemed like a burden on the group. He also tried to get Deanna to kick Rick out of Alexandria by telling her that Rick couldn’t be trusted, although everyone seems to have forgotten that now.

Father Gabriel has gone through several crises of faith, and every time he goes through a period of searching and weakness, he seems to come out of. But the fact that throughout all these years he’s depended on the protection of the others without ever really emotionally investing in the kind of love, loyalty, and dedication that the rest of the group has for each other makes him a perennial outsider who just can’t commit to being a full member of the community.

From letting the member of his congregation get eaten right outside the church doors to actively working against Rick, Father Gabriel has had some decidedly cowardly moments. And even though he has had some good moments too, those definitely don’t make up for his past sins.

No one’s hands are clean in the post-apocalypse world, but that doesn’t mean that prior bad acts are forgotten if the members of the group have managed to forgive him. It might have been better if Jadis had taken him as her “A” to the helicopter community.
