18. Nyxly

Nyxly was Supergirl‘s final big bad. A potential ally that Kara initially met in the Phantom Zone, the pair’s friendship turned sour when the Girl of Steel prevented her from escaping to cause mischief and mayhem. But she did escape, and she brought that mischief and mayhem to National City in a bid to get revenge on Supergirl for betraying her.

When she was at her best, Nyxly was a fun villain who brought the screen to life. That was largely down to Peta Sergeant’s delightfully whimsical performance and the fact that the character was, of course, an imp from the Fifth Dimension. Unfortunately, the show struggled with the character throughout the bumper-length 20-episode season and that left viewers unsure how to feel about her a lot of the time.

There were times she was wicked and all-powerful. There were times she was nice and empathetic. And there were times she was just all-around confusing. Yes, that might fit the character, but it left the final season feeling a bit all over the place. The character had to be depowered halfway through the season because she was just too powerful, and the subsequent quest for the All-Stone Totem dragged on far too long.

Nyxly’s role in the finale sums up her journey perfectly. Glimpses of potential for redemption half of the time, only for it to be dropped the other half. Her random romance with Lex Luthor and quick sentencing to a lifetime in the Phantom Zone were a disservice to her in a final season that just had too much going on.
