13. Morbius

Morbius is Sony’s most recent addition to their cinematic universe, and it’s also their worst. The film features Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare genetic disease, who makes a cure using bat DNA that essentially turns him into a bloodthirsty vampire. He tries to keep his hunger at bay with synthetic blood he developed, but not before attracting the attention of the FBI after slaughtering a boatful of mercenaries.

Aware of the side effects, Morbius’s adopted brother, Milo, steals the cure and goes on a killing spree. After Morbius confronts him, Milo tries to get Morbius to accept his vampiric nature. Morbius refuses, causing them to fight in a sequence that suffers from the same issue as the first Venom movie, where we see two CGI models in a poorly lit environment flying through the air and grabbing at each other with no actual weight behind the action.

The fight takes them all across the city before they end up underground. Morbius uses his ability to communicate with bats to throw a swarm of them at Milo before stabbing Milo in the chest, killing him. The film ends abruptly with him flying away, evading the two agents chasing him the entire movie. The post-credit is equally nonsensical, bringing Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the MCU to tease a potential Sinister Six project that we hope doesn’t go anywhere.

As far as Spider-Man-related characters to give a solo film to, Morbius isn’t a horrible choice, but the execution is what makes it so bad. Morbius is not just the worst Marvel movie Sony has released but one of the worst comic book movies ever. Despite the memes made about it, it’s not even bad in a fun way that makes it enjoyable to watch.

Instead of taking a unique approach and embracing the antagonistic aspects of one of Spider-Man’s more underrated villains, the film tries to turn him into an anti-hero. It’s a formulaic and confusing mess that ultimately falls flat.
