5. What If…? – (Season 4, Episode 16)

The episode picks up seconds after Simmons and Daisy upload themselves into the Framework, the virtual reality now overseen by Aida, the first L.M.D. Radcliffe created. They find themselves in a world where HYDRA has completely taken over, and everyone they know is different. A powerless Daisy wakes up in bed with Ward, who she learns she’s in a relationship with and works alongside at HYDRA. However, Simmons wakes up in a mass grave due to her alternate self staying loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. when HYDRA took over.

Simmons visits Coulson, a history teacher loyal to HYDRA, and tries to get him to remember his past life, but he threatens to call the authorities. After she leaves, he looks at various clippings he collected over the years that subconsciously remind him of his past life. After arriving at the Triskelion, now a HYDRA base, Daisy learns that May is a high-ranking HYDRA operative and that Fitz is the organization’s second-in-command known as “The Doctor,” who conducts horrific experiments on Inhumans and is in a relationship with Ophelia, Aida’s Framework counterpart.

After reuniting, Daisy and Simmons get chased by HYDRA agents but are saved by Ward, who secretly works for S.H.I.E.L.D. The pair try to go back to the real world to make a plan to rescue their friends but quickly realize that isn’t an option and that they’re stuck there for the foreseeable future. In the closing moments, Daisy sneaks up on Coulson and talks to him, breaking through the Framework’s hold over him and getting him to remember her.

While season 4 was full of amazing episodes, the fact that the two episodes considered the best take place back-to-back shows just how great the writing was. It does a tremendous job of establishing the new storyline and the twisted reality for the characters to try and navigate. It also, for better or worse, allowed us to see alternate takes on the characters we had gotten used to. The bonus gag of Ward still being a double agent in the alternate reality, this time for S.H.I.E.L.D., was a fun way to bring the actor back again.
