3. The End – (Season 5, Episode 22)

Before it got renewed for two more additional seasons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. expected to finish with season 5, and “The End” was intended to be the finale. It needed to close the loop on all the prophecies established by Robin and serve as a send-off for Agent Coulson, who was dying as a result of letting Ghost Rider’s spirit of vengeance take over his body to help them defeat Aida in the previous season.

The team argues over what to do with the centipede serum they recovered, with Yo-Yo wanting to use it to kill Talbot while May and Daisy want to use it to heal Coulson. Talbot had kidnapped Robin and her mother to try and find more Gravitonium, leading him to Chicago. Led by Mack, who gets unanimously voted as the new Director, the team heads to the city to help evacuate civilians.

While rescuing Robin and her mother with Mack and May, Fitz gets crushed beneath falling debris and dies from his injuries. Daisy faces off against a Gravitnium-infused General Talbot, now going by Gravitron after being driven insane by General Hale’s torture and believing that he was the key to stopping Thanos. Talbot begins to absorb Daisy, but she injects herself with the Centipede serum, which Coulson slipped into her gauntlets, giving her enough power to blast Talbot into space.

Coulson officially announces his retirement from S.H.I.E.L.D., and a commemorative plaque for him gets added to the Zephyr. The episode with Coulson on a beach in Tahiti with Agent May while the rest of the team heads off into space to find the version of Fitz still floating around in space from earlier in the season.

Despite leaving things open-ended, making it clear that while Coulson’s journey had ended, the rest of the team would continue to have adventures offscreen, it wrapped the series up nicely. It hits all the beats you would want from a finale, featuring some of the series’ best emotional moments and an epic action scene that looks pretty great considering the show’s budget. While the extra seasons were great and added a lot to the series, this would have been a satisfying place for the story to end if it did wind up being the final episode.
