Every Attack on Titan season ranked from worst to best

1. Attack on Titan Season 2
Last but certainly not least is Attack on Titan season 2, a season we believe is the best season of the anime’s entire history.
Starting off, this season was the comeback season for fans after four long years, meaning there was a lot on the line. Would the season be as good as the first? Will the sophomore season stay truthful to the original source material? What story could this season tell that was different from the others? Fortunately, this season didn’t fail to meet our expectations!
From the reveal that Ymir is actually the Jaw Titan to Reiner and Bertholdt disclosing that they are the Armor and the Colossal Titan, season 2 was when we started to really grasp that killing Titans and walling them off from society isn’t enough, as there are those with the ability to consciously transform into titan but aim to go against Eren and his home.
But what cemented our belief that the greatest enemy was really humanity was the introduction of the horrifying, menacing Beast Titan. For the first time, viewers felt truly helpless, staring at any enemy that seemed too strong, and more importantly, too intelligent to be slayed like any regular titan.
The Beast Titan knew the strengths and weaknesses of humanity and didn’t hesitate to exploit their weaknesses by picking their strongest individuals one by one. Unlike our previous opponents, this particular assassin was just too formidable for anyone to know how to defeat. We were truly stiff thinking about how exactly Eren and his allies were to deal with all this.
Undoubtedly, season 2 is the season to watch if you want all the aspects of Attack on Titan—the drama, fights, lore, and important characters—in one place.
Rating: 9.8 out of 10
What Could’ve Made Season 2 Better: Again, no real notes come to mind. But if there had to be one tweak, we would say a few more episodes would’ve been nice, especially so we have more time to sit back and really take in everything that happened. (Sometimes it feels like things happened so fast!)
Honorable Mentions
While the spin-offs and OVAs of Attack on Titan were excluded from this list, we still think they are worth mentioning, especially because the majority of these titles are canon. With this in mind, here’s how we think they fare now:
- 7. Distress (2014)
- 6. Junior High (2015)
- 5. Wall Sina, Goodbye (2017)
- 4. Lost in the Cruel World (2018)
- 3. A Sudden Visitor: The Torturous Curse of Adolescence (2014)
- 2. No Regrets (2013)
- 1. Ilse’s Notebook: Notes from a Scout Regiment Member (2013)
With Attack on Titan nearing its end, it’s possible that the final season of the beloved anime may overtake all of these installments and take the number one spot. The only way to find out is to tune in to the continuation of the final season, reportedly airing on Saturday, Nov. 4 on Crunchyroll!
