50 greatest Disney characters of all-time ranked
By Mark Lynch
28. Woody
"From now on you must take good care of your toys, because if you don’t, we’ll find out, Sid. We toys can see everything! So play nice!"
When we first meet Woody, he’s the beloved leader of Andy’s toys. Then a new toy comes in (Buzz Lightyear) and Woody becomes jealous. The movie continues and Woody learns to be better. His jealousy turns into admiration and acceptance. Throughout the next three movies, he continues to be a leader. In the end, he leaves his family to find homes for other wayward toys.
Toy Story shouldn’t have been as deep as it was and all of it revolves around Woody. Whenever the story changed or someone new came along, Woody was directly involved. Sure, Buzz Lightyear was fun, but his best friend carried the load.
27. Ariel
"“I just don’t see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.” -Ariel"
The Little Mermaid may be one of Disney’s best animated movies. “Part of Your World” is an iconic song. For that alone, she has to be on this list. Jodi Benson’s voice is a constant reminder that Disney songs are important to the franchise.
Later, Halle Bailey carried that legacy. She had a lot of pressure going in and still sang as beautifully as the original and performed at a high level.
“Part of Your World” plays a major part in her ranking, but there’s more to Ariel’s character. She may not have spoken much during the middle of the project, but she was still captivating. The creative team made it a point to show that a character is more than their voice. And, in the end, she brutally defeated Ursula. What more could you ask for?
