American Horror Story: All 4 Jessica Lange characters ranked from worst to best
1. Sister Jude
Season: American Horror Story: Asylum
Sister Jude started off on American Horror Story: Asylum as an antagonistic character, but by the end of those 13 episodes, she had us all rooting for her. From her sassy one-liners to her attempt to stand up against the corrupt nature of some of the figureheads within the Asylum, she became a fan-favorite before the second season had reached its halfway point, and that was thanks in no small part to Jessica Lange’s incredible performance.
The writing for her was consistently strong too, as Judy Martin was undoubtedly the most complex of the characters Lange played throughout her four seasons on the show. She struggled with the sins of her past, the questions of her commitment to the Asylum and what it stood for, and her feelings for the corrupt Monsignor Timothy Howard. She was far from the perfect image she had created, and it was such a compelling watch to see her attempt to atone for her wrongdoings and ultimately survive the asylum when she too was imprisoned in it against her will.
Lange was at her very best here and Jude’s downfall remains one of the show’s greatest arcs. And we can’t forget about her impromptu performance of “The Name Game” in the asylum itself, which has rightfully gone down in history as one of TV’s greatest moments.
