The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

Perhaps none of the TV shows to air this year were as genuinely surprising as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Hopes were high, for sure, but nobody could have predicted the level of quality we would get from the Walking Dead spinoff and just how different it would be.

Its title character was the lead of The Walking Dead in its final few seasons, so how could a show about him set itself apart? By setting itself in Paris and giving him a new mission, of course!

It worked so well, because Daryl Dixon was one of the most immersive shows of the year. Its cinematography is stunning, its performances captivating, and its story compelling; there is so much that this show got right in its first episode that you never have to question any of the subsequent ones. It’s a thrilling experience to watch unfold, and a welcome change of pace from what TWD was doing when it wrapped up.

On the main show, Daryl Dixon still felt like a supporting character in the lead role. Here, he is a fully-fleshed, enthralling protagonist whose mission to protect Laurent and return home guides us through the brave new world that the spinoff has to offer. This is quality television – and cinematic quality television at that.

Easily one of the TWD Universe’s highest highs, we can’t wait for season 2.
