Superman and Lois
The CW’s Superman and Lois just hasn’t missed, and it’s third season was the latest example of that. Its high production values and strong writing are well-documented at this point, but season 3 upped the ante in so many ways, and it all had to do with a more character-driven story.
The third season revolved around Lois Lane’s cancer diagnosis. It was an unexpected development for a broadcast TV show about a superhero, but it resulted in one of the most striking storylines on TV all year, raising awareness throughout. Elizabeth Tulloch shone with the material, delivering a nuanced, authentic performance that guided the whole season, standing out across all of television as perhaps the best performance of the year.
Being that Superman and Lois knows how to balance its storylines well, there was also focus on a new villain in Bruno Mannheim, who also brought an unexpectedly layered storyline with him. And it all led to the introduction of the Man of Steel’s archenemy Lex Luthor and a genuinely jaw-dropping season finale that highlighted why Superman and Lois is so revered among comic book fans.
We’re disappointed that The CW has chosen to end its joint-most-watched show with its upcoming fourth season, but we have no doubt that season 4 will be a ride worthy of ending this wonderful series. For the show remains one of the best TV shows of our generation.
Verdict: BEST
