12. Series 12

In Jodie Whittaker's second season as the Doctor, the dynamic of "Team TARDIS" finally started coming together. Ryan and Graham became the family each other needed, and the Doctor and Yasmin developed an exciting degree of chemistry. This helped draw in new fans and provide older fans with hope that Chris Chibnall was hitting his stride.

Unfortunately, there were still several episodes that unsuccessfully attempted to tackle complicated social problems. For example, "Praxeus" tried to warn about the dangers of microplastics, but the convoluted alien connection made it hard to take seriously. These episodes took too much of a surface-level approach to issues that require far more practical intervention than the weak moral that, for instance, plastic can be dangerous.

Fans are also divided about this season because it initiated Chris Chibnall's great retcon: the Timeless Child arc. While many viewers loved this development, those who have been watching for a decade or longer tended to see it as sacrilege.

Despite that, there were several episodes that were very enjoyable. The ones that leaned into genre conventions, like "Spyfall" and "The Haunting of Villa Diodati," managed to keep a strong pace while also providing good character development. Overall, Series 12 offered a few very good episodes alongside several that fans could do without.
