What If...? season 2: Every episode ranked from worst to best

1. What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper? (Season 2, episode 5)

The biggest storyline going into What If...? season 2 was the reveal that Steve Rogers and his Hydra Stomper were still alive. How would a time-displaced Captain Peggy Carter cope with that, and what would it mean for her world? Well, we got those answers and more in the fifth episode of the season, and each one of them brought a smile to my face.

This episode also felt like it could have taken place in the MCU's main timeline. From the reprisal of the iconic Avengers theme to the banter between Captain Carter and Black Widow, there was so much to love about it. But perhaps the best thing about it was the compelling storylines involving Steve's return, his apparent alliance with the Red Room, and the final showdown in which Peggy and Natasha Romanoff had to overcome their pasts to save the present.

This is the one we were waiting for and it did not disappoint. Captain Carter once again proved why she's an excellent choice of lead as one of the show's primary characters, while the exploration of Black Widow's backstory made it that much more personal to her too, offering her more than just a supporting role. The chemistry between Hayley Atwell and Lake Bell was great, and it's a reminder of why a Captain Carter/Black Widow animated show would work well.

The most enjoyable adventure of What If...? season 2 and the moment that its central storyline really gained some momentum, this was a gem of an episode.
