My excitement for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts movie just nosedived (and here's why)
Ah, the magic of Kingdom Hearts, blending Disney's enchantment with the adventurous spirit of Square Enix's Final Fantasy.
Remember the article I wrote yesterday, talking about how an animated Kingdom Hearts movie is reportedly in the works? Well, I'm back because there's a new twist in this epic tale. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Disney's upcoming Kingdom Hearts adaptation might be a live-action/CGI hybrid. Now, that's like mixing sea salt ice cream with curry - it might sound adventurous, but is it really a good idea?
Does this really need to be a live-action/CGI hybrid?
Imagine Donald Duck waddling around in CGI, Goofy doing his thing in live-action, and Sora caught in between. It's like a gummi ship crash-landed into the Uncanny Valley. Kingdom Hearts thrives on its vibrant, animated charm, where emotions are as animated as the characters themselves. A live-action adaptation could dampen that whimsical magic faster than you can say "Heartless." The beauty of Kingdom Hearts lies in its ability to transport us to a world where anything is possible, where our favorite Disney characters come to life in a way only animation can achieve. Mixing in live-action risks losing that enchantment. We want to see Sora's spiky hair and Mickey's ear-to-ear smile as they battle the darkness, not as realistic renderings that make them look out of place in their own world. Not to mention the casting challenges for the Final Fantasy characters. This just screams "a disaster waiting to happen" and I'm hoping Disney pumps the breaks and thinks about this for a hot minute before going forward.
Kingdom Hearts is about a fantastical universe where dreams and realities collide. The charm of the franchise is in its animation, in its ability to blur the lines between Disney's classics and Square Enix's legends.
So, Disney, let's keep the magic alive with animation.
Let's journey through the worlds of Kingdom Hearts with the same wonder and awe we had when we first picked up a controller or watched a Disney classic. Let's not fix what isn't broken.
