A Murder Mystery On A Universal Scale: A Sneak Peek At Original Sin #1

The Watcher is dead, a scary enough idea in and of itself. But there’s worse news too: whoever was powerful enough to kill Uatu also took his eyes, and is now in possession of all of the secrets of the Marvel Universe.

That’s the set-up for Original Sin, the eight-part event that begins next month. After an unknown force destroys Uatu’s home on the moon, loots his tech and steals his very eyes, the Marvel heroes must band together to uncover the truth. The search could be dangerous, but so could the knowledge that Uatu’s assassin now possesses. And the Watcher’s dead body may not be the only one to turn up before it’s all said and done.

“This is a murder mystery on a Marvel Universe scale, so the suspects and motivations span all of space and time, and even the nature of existence itself!” Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said in a press release. “And in fact, there are two possibilities: first, that the Watcher was killed because of some grudge or slight, or to gain possession of his secrets. Or, more menacingly, the Watcher was killed in order to prevent him from seeing what comes next — to prevent him from interceding as he has so many times before! Neither is a particularly comforting thought to the heroes of the Marvel Universe!”

As you can see in these preview pages, the discovery of Uatu’s body brings Nick Fury and an assortment of Avengers to the scene of the crime, and the desperate search is on from there. Also of note: the odd couple of Doctor Strange and the Punisher, apparently interrogating a potential witness.

Original Sin #1 goes on sale on May 7 from the team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Mike Deodato. Look for a slew of variants as well, including covers from Gabrielle Dell’Otto, Ed McGuinness, Skottie Young and Steve McNiven.
