Margot Robbie Cast As Harley Quinn In Suicide Squad?
By Steve Lam
Brought to our attention by Dan Calvisi of Act Four Screenplays from a report in Collider, it seems that Margot Robbie has been cast to play Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The announcement is not official yet, but multiple sources have been buzzing about Robbie being cast. If it is official, it wouldn’t be surprising news due to recent rumors of a short-list of actors being courted.
The roster of stars have included Margot Robbie herself, Tom Hardy, Ryan Gosling, and Will Smith. The most recent rumor has been Jared Leto being approached for the role of The Joker. Margot Robbie recently shot to fame in The Wolf of Wall Street, a film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Robbie is currently set to star in two upcoming action/adventure movies: Z for Zachariah (2015) and Tarzan (2016).
The character of Harley Quinn first appeared in September of 1993 in Batman: The Animated Series. Originally a walk-on role for the character, writer Paul Dini decided to give the Joker a sidekick. With Arleen Sorkin lending her voice, Dini also incorporated aspects of Sorkin’s traits into the character. Harley Quinn would later be given a background story in the 1994 graphic novel Mad Love where it’s learned that she use to be an Arkham Asylum psychiatrist named Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzell. Treating the Joker, she falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick.
Suicide Squad is currently set for a release date of August 5, 2016.
