Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Brainstorm Session – “The Things We Bury”

facebooktwitterreddit

This season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is pumping every new episode with so much information that it’s hard to keep things straight. Keep reading if you want to follow my weird train of thought on some things that caught my eye in this week’s episode.

Overarching Questions

1. Was Christian telling the truth about the “well incident?”

Ward had Christian facing his demise, dangling him over that fated well where the incident with Thomas happened years before. In a panic, Christian exclaims that yes, he forced Ward to do it because he couldn’t do it himself. Everyone is under the assumption that because Christian was under so much pressure, he cracked and told the truth. But this family isn’t that simple. It wouldn’t surprise me if he said he did it just to placate Ward and try to get away with his life still intact. What’s the point of lying about something like this? I don’t know. The Ward family is messed up. But that leads me on to…

2a. Did Ward actually kill Christian or was it a ploy to get back in with Hydra?

We all know that Grant Ward is a twisted man, more twisted than we ever could have imagined. So I find it very strange that for all the talk about how crazy and awful Christian and his parents have been that there is literally no focus on their deaths at the hands of their sibling/son. They get a random comment in a news broadcast.

Imagine how much more terrifying Ward would be if they even showed us just vague clips of how he did it, even if it’s literally just him outside the house lighting a match and dropping it into a trail of gasoline. It strikes me as strange that they showed nothing. Plus, after Christian basically admitted that he had a hand in Ward’s escape (only putting four guards on him while being transferred), you would think they might be able to reach some sort of accord.

Then again, Grant Ward is crazy, so I wouldn’t put it past him to have just killed everyone outright and be done with his family.

2b. Is Thomas Ward still alive?

This is more a question for you, readers: we know Thomas was in the house when Ward set it on fire all those years back when Garrett recruited him. Is it ever stated anywhere that Thomas died in the fire, or did he manage to escape/be rescued? If he is alive and the rest of the Ward family is dead, do you think we will see Thomas coming out of nowhere for retribution?

3. What is Raina?

This actually goes back to either the season finale of season one or the episode right before it. Raina knows she is special somehow, and asks Garrett when he’s super-crazy, “What will I become?” It’s been rumored by Chloe Bennet that Skye and Raina have more in common than we know. With the reveal in the upcoming episode that the blue alien is Kree (finally), everyone is thinking that Skye and Raina are Inhuman, or half-Inhuman or something.

Especially since Raina asked “What will I become,” because if this show gives us a crapload of back story on the Inhumans and introduces the Terrigen Mist, then yes, Raina will become something more.

I want to say that she knows more than she’s letting on, but she was pretty flustered facing Coulson the last time we saw her. She is in the upcoming episode; it’ll be interesting to see what happens with her.

4. Is it bad that I’m in love with Skye’s dad?

If you missed my review of “The Things We Bury,” then you missed all of my raving about Kyle MacLachlan. I find him incredibly entertaining, absolutely creepy, and a man with his own motives who will let no one get in his way. Honestly, I’m rooting for him. Mostly because putting him up against Ward and Whitehall will be such a delight to watch. Am I alone in loving him this much? I don’t think so. Will I change my tune if/when he and Skye meet in person? Maybe. …Probably.

Weekly Avengers Cameo

This week it’s Tony Stark. Agent Hill accidentally name-drops “Director Coulson,” leading Stark on a hunt to track him down and make sure Hill isn’t BS-ing him. He stumbles upon their outing in the Australian outback and sneaks in through a back door. While Triplett covers Fitz to go take care of the transceiver, he pops up behind Fitz.

“You sure you can handle this, Doctor Who?” he quips, scaring the crap out of Fitz. And when Coulson shows up and sees Stark watching over Fitz (probably eating a bag of something and casually hanging out), he looks at Coulson and says, “Aren’t you supposed to be dead somewhere?” There’s a hint of anger in his words.

“I should say the same of you,” Coulson replies. “After all, you were off the grid after the Mandarin destroyed your Malibu home. …I caught up on the news.”

Fun Theory I’m Making Up Right Now

I’ve mentioned it in a recap before, but I think there’s more to it now that we’re getting more information: Skye is somehow related to Peter “Star-Lord” Quill. James Gunn has said that he’s not going with the comic book version of Quill’s father.

If the Inhumans are relegated solely to Earth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then the people of Xandar have no idea what the Inhumans are. It would make sense if Quill’s father was one of the Royals. Skye and Quill could be cousins, especially if her father turns out to be Maximus the Mad. Plus, this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course things are going to tie into other movies. This would be the perfect way to tie in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 into The Inhumans, or even Avengers: Infinity War.

I’m 90% positive this will not be the case whatsoever, but let me have my glimmer of hope that we can get Burt Macklin Chris Pratt on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. We just need to get the Guardians into this sector of the universe.

Weekly Webisode Idea

This week, it’s “Director Coulson Versus the Australian Outback.” We don’t get to see Coulson and crew heading to the base in Australia in the episode, so why not show us their trek there in a webisode, with Coulson stopping every now and then to pull out his phone and check it, only to put it back in his pocket, dejected.

“Sir, what are you doing?” Fitz asks.

“Sorry… I keep thinking I see a kangaroo,” Coulson replies.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a reprieve this coming week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. I will probably post another one of these brainstorm sessions next week as well, because there’s a multitude of questions I didn’t even pose in this one. Then, you get a reprieve from me for the following episode’s recap–I’ll be in bright and sunny Florida.
