“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD:” Daisy’s Pointless Crusade

“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” has turned Daisy into a solo vigilante with a just cause. But her cause really isn’t that just, more… tiring. Here’s why.

With Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Skye’s character has always felt a little problematic. Since episode one, fans have taken exception to her. She came across as a bit of a Mary Sue, a prodigal child destined for greatness despite not being that great of a character.

As the episodes progressed and we moved to later seasons, Skye changed towards the better. the obvious romantic angle with Ward got shot down in a Hydra-shaped bullet. She took big strides as a character. And then Terrigenesis happened where she got a little more fun, a little more predictable, and a little more… whiny, I guess is the best word.

As a side-note, I do actually like Skye/Daisy and love the strides Chloe Bennet has taken throughout the seasons. But even I find myself getting annoyed with the character. So to go along with the theme of season four, let’s play with fire. Let’s give in to my annoyed side and run with it.

So far in season four, Daisy has cut herself off from SHIELD despite still having ties to them (Yo-Yo stealing her bone meds, contact with Simmons). It’s all for a noble cause–her guilt at Lincoln’s death, at betraying the team, at falling into Hive’s sway, at knowing if Hive returned, she would still try to follow him despite being cured.

The problem? Her cause feels like something she has already done in previous seasons. Like when she became an Inhuman. She kept it hidden from the group for the longest time and then buried herself away in Afterlife and almost started an out of control war.

It’s basically past the point of anyone caring. Case in point: Daisy and Coulson’s reunion at the end of this week’s episode. Daisy attempted to apologize, but Coulson cut to the point: he’s just happy she’s safe. She refuses to listen to reason. Simmons basically told her she’s an idiot and shouldn’t show up whenever she wants. As much as everyone still loves her and wants to help, they cannot take her methods any longer.

Part of me gets it. Part of me understands her guilt for Lincoln’s death, trying to cope with that, trying to keep everyone around her safe by staying away. In the words of Nick Fury, it’s a stupid-ass decision.

She wants to help protect the Inhumans against the Watch Dogs, but one lone vigilante-even teamed up with Ghost Rider–can’t always do as much as the Agents of SHIELD. Especially now that they are a legitimate, active organization again with resources and funding.

Plus, if she returned, she would no longer have to steal her meds. She would have the proper medical care she needs. And she could wear her gauntlets that help protect her bones (her reasoning for not wearing them is also stupid).

Of course, she’s also kind of wanted by a lot of law enforcement for vigilante crimes. The best option may come further into the season.

With Daisy back in the SHIELD fold (albeit temporarily), her chances of permanently rejoining the team seem more positive. Maybe someone talks sense into her in an upcoming episode. I hate to see our SHIELD team fractured; they need to fall together again.
