American Horror Story: Coven

AHS can have its ups and downs in seasons. Yet the third season is seen as a high point for the series. On the surface, it looks like a tale of a group of young witches learning about their powers. But like any AHS season, things get deeper and darker with multiple time periods and some often insane turns laced with wicked black comedy moments.

The cast is to die for: Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates (who won an Emmy for it), Angela Bassett, Patti LuPone, and yes, Stevie Nicks among others. It was such a popular year that several characters popped up in later AHS seasons, yet this year alone is among the best in the franchise’s long history.

Wednesday

This Netflix sensation is a marriage made in…well, maybe not heaven: Tim Burton directing a story based on the Addams Family. Jenna Ortega is perfectly cast as Wednesday who attends a private school for supernatural creatures and tracking a dangerous creature. Ortega is marvelous with her deadpan expression, wicked quips, and persona to pull you into the shenanigans.

We get turns like Wednesday’s relationship with werewolf roommate Enid, the famous dance sequence, Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia, and even the original movie Wednesday Christina Ricci involved. With Season 2 set for 2025, this series is one of Netflix’s biggest hits and more than living up to the iconic franchise.
