The Magicians
The best way to describe this Syfy series is if Harry Potter was themed for adults. It looks like a fun tale of a young man discovering that the magical books he read as a kid are real and enrolling in a magic school. Then things take some insane turns with how dark magic can become, and the actors are involved in some truly off-the-wall storytelling from another dimension to various clashes with demons.
The show is nearly impossible to describe, with episodes revolving around anything from a musical to sitcoms, with the actors always wonderful (especially the foul-mouthed Margo). It was never an easy show to truly get into but anyone wanting a different take on a magical story can enjoy this.
The Magicians is streaming on Hulu
Midnight Texas
It’s a bit surprising that this show was on NBC, of all places, yet even network TV couldn’t hamper it much. The title refers to a Texas town that’s home to vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures. When a psychic who talks to ghosts arrives in town, he soon learns of some threats that force the creatures to band together.
The show has a nice energy to it in the various magical antics. It gets better in Season 2, with Nestor Carbonella and Jaime Ray Newman as a mysterious couple, and Newman gets some amazing material. The two-season run was pretty overlooked yet some magical delights for those who find it.
