Geoff Johns, John Romita Jr. To Team On Superman

Looks like DC’s most iconic and powerful super hero is getting a new creative team worthy of the word “super.”

As confirmed by DC earlier today, writer (and DC exec) Geoff Johns and artist John Romita Jr. are taking over the main”Superman” title later this year. It’s perhaps the biggest boost of star power that could be put behind the Man of Steel, one that suggests the company is very serious about putting him at the top of the heap of super heroes.

Of course it isn’t like Superman has lacked big name talent since his New 52 relaunch a few years ago. Grant Morrison wrote the first 18 issues of “Action Comics,” beginning with a story set in the past of the new continuity. And Scott Snyder, one of the hottest writers today thanks to his work on the Batman books, has been teaming with Jim Lee on “Superman Unchained,” though that series is set to wrap up with April’s issue #9.

Johns has also written “Superman” before for one brief run back in 2002-2003, along with a lengthier stay on “Action Comics.” He also helped usher in the New 52 version of Superman by writing him in “Justice League,” though you’d be hard pressed to find too many people who would say there was much character development going on in those arcs.

Romita, on the other hand, is new not only to Superman but to DC as well. He’s drawn nearly every Marvel character ever invented in a distinguished career, and seeing him work on the competition’s books will take some getting used to for lifelong comics fans. His art style tends to be divisive, but there’s no doubt that his name still carries weight, and his muscular technique seems to be tailor made for this particular gig.

One cause for slight pause may come from the interview that IGN did with the two creators shortly after the news broke. In it, Johns says he wants to “kind of reset Superman and his universe in the New 52.” That could cause hardcore Man of Tomorrow aficionados to get a tad nervous considering there are less than three years worth of stories that built that universe at this point. The latest iterations of DC’s icons aren’t really crying out for a reset already, but if anyone can add some new twists to existing mythos without tearing everything down, it’s probably Johns. Just ask Green Lantern fans.

At any rate, the Johns-JRJR team is a buzzworthy one almost guaranteed to shoot “Superman” up the sales charts this summer. And really, who doesn’t like seeing Superman take flight?
