When Ben Affleck was announced as the next Batman, Batman fans lost their minds while Superman fans chuckled in the back corner. Now the roles have been reversed as the announcement of who will play the next Lex Luthor has sent shockwaves throughout the comic book world.
According to Variety, Oscar nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as the next Lex Luthor.
This is a decision that has taken many Superman fans by surprise and given Batman fans something to shove back in their faces for laughing over Bat-fleck. But since we’re all in this together now, it’s time to come to grips with what Eisenberg’s casting means for Lex Luthor’s direction.
Many still believe that this will be a traditional adaptation of a comic book, but it’s not. Director Zack Snyder has been looking to update the franchise and in doing so, update that character. The casting of Eisenberg signals this, as his Lex Luthor will be less Gene Hackman style business bad guy and more Mark Zuckerberg technological bad guy.
We won’t know for sure how well Eisenberg works in the role until the film hits theaters on May 6, 2016, but so far the room seems to be split on how things will go.
