See Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin grapple with Spider-Man
By Daniel Wood
There’s a plethora of villains in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’. There’s Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, a russian mobster who at some point during the movie becomes a mechanised Rhino. There’s Jamie Foxx’s Electro, a mild-mannered OsCorp employee who falls into a vat of eels and consequently is able to control electricity. And most recently announced is BJ Novak as Alistair Smythe, who in the comics becomes the Ultimate Spider Slayer.
As you can see there’s certainly a lot going on, but of course I’ve missed one villain out. Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis. Batman has the Joker, Superman has Lex Luther and Spider-Man has the Green Goblin. In the film Dane DeHaan is set to take on the role of Spidey’s main villain as a young Harry Osborn. Not much is known but the international trailer does show the two fighting in an area full of cogs.
As you can see DeHaan’s Goblin version is un-masked which is a big adjustment to the Goblin we saw in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film. Personally I like this, it means we can see facial expressions and makes the whole thing much less ‘Power Rangers’. He’s also wearing a mech-suit which ties into what we’ve seen of the Rhino so far, it appears that a lot of the super-strength the villains possess will be because of technology provided by OsCorp.
The rumours are that Dane DeHaan who was enamoured with the work Doctor Curt Connors (The Lizard) was doing, as he can be seen saying something along the lines of ‘We have the power to change the world’, injects himself with the same serum and in turn becomes the Green Goblin (his face does get a little bit green).
We also know from the trailer that Spider-Man has to save Gwen Stacy from falling to her death in a structure full of similar looking cogs. From that I can surmise that the Green Goblin, who was a childhood friend of Peter Parkers finds out he’s Spider-Man and tries to hit the Wallcrawler where it hurts, with Gwen Stacy. Both the trailer, and the latest clip hint at bad times ahead for Gwen, and I think this is it!
