Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the funniest Superhero film ever?

Lots of people have moaned about film versions of Spider-Man losing the humour and charm that is so prevalent in the comic-books and one of the main reasons why Spider-Man is everybody’s friendly neighbourhood super-hero. But could Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 herald a welcome return to the witty webslinger who has funny quips and amusing one-liners, as well as webbing in his arsenal?
Well, several media outlets were treated to a sneak peak filming event yesterday where they got to see 30 minutes of footage from the film (I know what most of you are thinking, ‘so they just watched the trailers then?’ but no, they actually watched some pretty cool scense from the sound of it) and the general consensus seems to be that the film is funny.
Director Marc Webb was apparently determined to bring everyone the version of Spider-Man that they wanted, after going some way to bring him back for Amazing Spider-Man, adopted some pretty cool measures to make sure the films comedic moments were up to scratch. Webb revealed during a Q&A session after the press event that the production actually brought in a roundtable of comedians to help with Peter Parker’s dialogue, with star Andrew Garfield then testing the lines to make sure the lines fit with the portrayal.
"“We got some of the best comedians,” the director said. “It’s sort of a private thing that you can’t really tell who’s in it, but these amazing, really brilliant comedians, many of them are comic book fans, come in and help us with coming up with jokes and one-liners and quips that are part of Spider-Man’s universe.”"
But did it work, is the film as funny as they’d hope?
Cinemablend reports that “The Amazing Spider-Man 2 footage that we saw did feature a good handful of funny Spidey wisecracks, the funniest coming in one of the early scenes in the movie when the hero is having a bit of a tête-à-tête with Aleksei Sytsevich a.k.a. Rhino.”
Indiewire says “All in all, the footage was really wonderful. It was, unlike the first film, willfully cartoon-y, in a good way”
And finally MTV add “Last general impression of the footage: it’s legitimately funny, a first for a Spider-Man movie. Every movie before has been surprisingly bereft of jokes, but the dialogue has Spider-Man quipping non-stop, and it works. There’s a scene where he introduces himself to Giamatti that has a superb quip, followed by a physical joke straight out of the comics, and it’s lovely.”
So there you have it, the film won’t just be all drama and action, there’ll be some comedy in there too!
