Manapul and Buccellato Talk Detective Comics
By Nick Tylwalk
Stylistically, it would be hard to find a bigger difference in the world of DC super heroes than going from the brightly colored blur of The Flash to the seedy underbelly of Gotham City in Detective Comics. That’s a big part of what makes the transition that Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato dive into the home of Batman with Detective Comics #30, on sale April 2.
Manapul’s cartoony style and bold layouts made him a perfect fit for The Flash, and while he and Buccellato took a little longer to get up to speed (pun partially intended) on the writing side, they managed to juggle a large supporting cast for Barry Allen to pretty good effect. As they told USA Today, they’ll be focusing on a very familiar secondary character right away in Detective: Harvey Bullock, who they already wrote and drew in the “Zero Year” crossover issue of The Flash.
Notably, they’re aiming to play up the pride Bullock has in his own detective skills as compared to the Dark Knight.
“I want to show the investigation from the point of view of two very determined, stubborn individuals,” Manapul said to USA Today. “It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing them compete to solve the case, and even more dynamic when their investigations eventually collide. There’s gonna be some serious fireworks.”
Still, most of the anticipation is for seeing how Manapul’s pencils work in the more “grounded” world of Gotham City. You can see for yourself in just two days when Detective Comics #30 goes on sale, and for more on all things Batman, check out our sister site, Caped Crusades.
