The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Opens To $47 Million Overseas
By Nick Tylwalk
Andrew Garfield’s second spin as Spider-Man is still two weeks away from swinging into theaters in North America, but overseas audiences got to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this weekend and turned out in good numbers. The movie managed to take in $47 million in its international debut, putting it in the same ballpark as its predecessor, which made $51 million on its opening weekend in a very similar group of markets.
It will be interesting to see if the time of year has any effect on the domestic opening weekend take for ASM 2, as the first film in the series opened over July 4th weekend in 2012. It hasn’t seemed to hurt super hero movies to debut in May instead of in the actual summer — indeed, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been owning May openings in recent years — but it’s something to keep in mind.
It’s also hard to get a handle on the buzz for this movie. While it’s currently sitting at a solid if not spectacular 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, one gets the sense that people like the parts of this movie, like Garfield and Emma Stone or the cool-looking visual effects for Jamie Foxx’s Electro, more than the whole. It’s also got multiple villains in it, which didn’t work out so well for Spider-Man 3.
Sony has big plans for the series that include multiple sequels and spin-offs after this one, meaning we’re getting more Spidey and friends until people stop showing up to see them. The strong overseas numbers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suggest that’s definitely not the case, so expect to see these flicks for the rest of the decade, at least.
