A Spider-Man/Avengers cross-over would be a ‘stunt’

Spider-Man and the Avengers
In the comic book Marvel universe the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Avengers and Spider-Man can all be seen alongside each other and quite often do form some of the biggest superhero team-ups in existence. However in the cinematic world all four properties are owned by four different studios and so the likelihood of them all appearing together is incredibly low.
However perhaps the biggest glaring absence is Spider-Man from the Avengers. Spider-Man lives in New York, is from the same universe and wasn’t seen when Loki and the Chitauri attacked New York in the first Avengers film, obviously because Sony own the rights to Spider-Man but it’s still a storyline plot hole if you still assume the Marvel films are all from the same universe.
But will we ever see Spider-Man in the Avengers? Well if Sony continue the impression they’ve given in a recent interview via Spider-Man producer Avi Arad I don’t think we have a hope in hell of seeing Spider-Man standing next to Iron Man, Captain America or Thor.
In an interview with IGN, Arad said “I think I’m probably a little bit of the militant here, I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas.” It would seem that Sony are committed to fleshing out their superhero franchise and expanding the Spider-Man cinematic universe in order to compete with Disney’s Avengers films. However I do find it slightly troubling that they’d have to ‘run out of ideas’ before what could potentially be one of the biggest moments in film could happen.
The other producer Matt Tolmach even went on to say “You know Avi always refers to that question as a stunt, If you were to do that, you know, Spider-Man in the Avengers is a stunt.” Again this seems to be Sony coming off a bit too strong here, Spider-Man for all intensive purposes should be in the Avengers, he’s a staple original member and simply isn’t there. It wouldn’t be a stunt, it’d be the right thing to do.
Still it clearly isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Fingers crossed Sony run out of ideas!
