X-Men And Fantastic Four Could Be Coming To TV
By Nick Tylwalk
If you’re of the opinion that more super heroes on the small screen is a good thing, you’ll like this news: Fox is considering TV for both the Fantastic Four and X-Men franchises.
That word comes from an interview Simon Kinberg gave Collider at WonderCon, where he left little doubt that Marvel’s first family and its large roster of mutant heroes could be headed for TV before too long:
"We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some extent and what Marvel is doing now with Daredevil and other shows on Netflix, it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV partly because there’s just not enough screens to do all these characters, and also because the serialized format of comic books is better suited for TV."
Not only that, but it would work well for spin-offs that might not warrant feature-length films. A New Mutants show, for instance, could be done on TV with a smaller budget and relatively unknown actors, whereas an X-Men show probably wouldn’t.
There’s a larger question of super hero saturation to consider, what with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. likely to be renewed (and deserving it, based on the last few episodes) and possibly being joined by Agent Carter on ABC, Arrow already renewed and almost certainly bringing The Flash along next fall on the CW, plus Gotham and Marvel’s Netflix shows all gearing up as well.
But so far, comic fans and the general public haven’t shown any super hero fatigue at the movies, so Fox can at least forge ahead on TV comfortable with that knowledge. I’m guessing we’ll see something on the Fox network within the next few seasons, and if someone wants to call dibs on recapping the shows for this site, you can get a jump on the competition and just email me now.
