It was announced today that Robert “Bob” Hastings, the voice of Commissioner Jim Gordon on Batman: The Animated Series and related DC series, has died at the age of 89.

From his IMDB page:

"Bob Hastings got his show business start in radio after WWII as the voice of “Archie Andrews” in the show of the same name (a spin-off of the Archie Comics series) on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The good-looking Hastings made the transition to television smoothly in 1949 in early galactic-action series like Captain Video and His Video Rangers(1949) and Atom Squad (1953). His first recurring role was as a lieutenant on The Phil Silvers Show (1955) (aka “Sgt. Bilko”).Most of his career has been spent in television, and he’s notable for roles such as Captain Binghamton’s yes-man “Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter” on McHale’s Navy (1962), one of the two Tommy Kelsey’s on All in the Family (1971), and “Captain Ramsey” onGeneral Hospital (1963). Hastings has also done much voice work, including that of “The Raven” on The Munsters (1964), “Superboy” on the The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure (1967) cartoons in the 1960s and, in recent years, the voice of “Commissioner Gordon” on the animated Batman: The Animated Series (1992) cartoons."

This is one of my favorite Commissioner Gordon moments.  He and Batman are continuing their yearly tradition of coffee at New Year’s.  It’s a short scene, but the friendship between them is clear, and is one of my favorite things about the two of them.

Bob Hastings also played Superboy in the ’60s Superman series, but most of us, of course, know him from Batman: The Animated Series.  I won’t lie, he’s always been the voice I hear for Commissioner Gordon when I read comics.  There was such a wonderful dad-like authority to him, whether he was talking to Barbara, to his fellow officers, or even to Batman.  He was funny and kind, but was definitely still in charge and clearly more than capable of doing his job.  He will be missed.
