Captain America III – Jeffrey Mace

Like William Naslund, Mace started his heroic career in another identity as the Patriot (with a creatively named sidekick named Miss Patriot!). He followed up on a suggestion by Bucky Barnes and rounded up costumed adventurers to battle the Nazi menace on the home front during World War II, forming the Liberty Legion with heroes like Miss America, the Whizzer and Blue Diamond.

Thanks to the magical power of retcons, Mace stepped into the role of Captain America after Naslund was killed, taking his place on the All-Winners Squad and fending off threats like the Future Man and Madame Death. He actually voluntarily gave up the super hero life, retiring as Cap in 1949.

Proving that sometimes the guys who carry the shield do get a happy ending, Mace married one of his former sidekicks, a patriotic woman whose real name was Betsy Ross. Though he eventually died of cancer, it was after he lived a long and apparently fulfilling life.

Mace also served without the benefit of the Super Solider Serum or any strength-boosting process, though his Marvel Universe Wiki entry rates him as tougher and a better fighter than Naslund.
