Death Of The BrooklyKnight: Marvel-Designed Nets Mascot Scrapped
By Nick Tylwalk
When you are slated to pay a record $90 million luxury tax, some things have to change. For the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, that apparently includes the mascot used for the last two seasons, one designed by Marvel.
According to Grantland’s Zach Lowe, the BrooklyKnight is on his way out, possibly because he just didn’t live up to the hype:
"The Knight itself was the mangled result of an expensive consulting deal with Marvel and a breathless roll-out that heightened anticipation for a game-changing take on the mascot genre. Instead, we got a dude in a black spandex suit."
Zach, Zach, Zach. Of course he had spandex, he was designed by a comic book company!
All jokes aside, Marvel really did take this project seriously on its end. CBR has more details, including the fact that his origin story was told in a special comic by two very prominent creators. Spoiler: we’re talking about Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato, the same guys who are currently doing Original Sin.
Ah well, even though it’s doubtful the next Nets mascot will shake up the world either, maybe sports and super heroes just weren’t intended to mix at the mascot level. Anyone know if the NHL’s Guardian Project is still a thing?
