Donald Glover Realizes A Dream As Voice Of Miles Morales In Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man
By Nick Tylwalk
Talk about fitting. Actor Donald Glover, also known as the rapper Childish Gambino, was widely credited by Brian Michael Bendis for providing the inspiration behind Miles Morales after publicly campaigning to play Spider-Man in a live-action movie a few years ago. Now he’s getting his chance to play Miles Morales, albeit in voice form.
USA Today reported today that the former Community star will voice Morales in at least one episode of Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, the latest season of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on Disney XD. Taking a cue from the upcoming Spider-Verse event from Marvel comics, the new season will have Peter Parker meeting various Spider-Men from parallel worlds, including the 13-year old Morales. Just like in the comics, the Parker on Morales’ world is dead, providing an extra twist to the characters’ initial meeting.
Glover’s love of Spider-Man made it onto TV when his character Troy was seen in his Spider-Man pajamas in the second season of Community. But even though he’s achieved part of his goal with this new role, he’s not giving up on his original dream of becoming his hero in the flesh just yet.
"I’m still holding out, though. I still have hopes to do something like that one day. I don’t look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he’s such an icon — you have to do something with him."
Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors premieres on Sunday, August 31, though Glover’s episode won’t air until 2015.
