Playmates Toys Doing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Figures Based On Original Mirage Comics
By Nick Tylwalk
Time for a different kind of Throwback Thursday. Playmates Toys, the company that makes action figures based on the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series on Nickelodeon, has already gone retro, producing figures that depict the Turtles the way they looked in the 1987 cartoon.
Now Playmates is reaching back even further with a line based on the original black-and-white comics by original franchise creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird at Mirage Studios. As you can see in the pics here, these are grittier ninjas who all dress in the same color, though of course you couldn’t tell that in the comics. Even Michelangelo looks like he means business, and if you look closely, you can see simulated sketch lines on them too.
According to Action Figure Fury, these figures should be hitting stores within the next few weeks. You’ll just have to remember that when you see “Comic Leonardo,” it doesn’t mean it’s a toy of the Turtles’ leader doing stand-up.
In any case, if you want to go back to the source, these figures could be an excellent way to show that you’ve been down with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from day one.
