Five reasons why you should get Amazing Spider-Man 2
By Daniel Wood
Okay, I’m just going to go right ahead and say it. I enjoyed Amazing Spider-Man 2, I really did. I admit that it was flawed, I admit that it definitely could have been better but as far as films with Spider-Man in them go, this one was actually really enjoyable, really fun and vastly entertaining. Sometimes people just need to sit back, accept something for what it is, and then enjoy the hell out of it.
With that being said all I’m seeing in the Spider-Man based circles that I traverse is the seemingly difficult internal debate of ‘Should I get the Amazing Spider-Man 2 on DVD or Blu-Ray, or should I not?’ For me the answer is actually quite simple, if you like Spider-Man, or just fairly well done action movies then absolutely yes. If you’re not sure because of what you’ve read or seen people say about the movie, why not make up your own mind, people have different tastes and whilst you might have read something from someone who hated the movie, you might love it.
But in the spirit of contradicting myself, here are five reasons why I’ll definitely be picking up a copy of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 and you should definitely listen to me!
1. If you’re truly a Spider-Man fan
A lot of the people criticising the movie are picking apart certain elements like the fact that there are too many villains, that Paul Giamatti’s Rhino was essentially pointless and that the pacing seemed off. However for those of you that are truly Spider-Man fans these criticisms fall flat because Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the best film at staying true to the source material, which is of course the comic books. If you’ve read more than five comic books of one story-arc in a row you’ll know that they tend to be completely pack full of twists and turns and stuffed full of villains. For example in the current Amazing Spider-Man series Peter is juggling so many separate storylines and arcs that the various things going on in Amazing Spider-Man 2 pale in comparison. Essentially I’m saying that the people criticising all of the various story arcs and tangents in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 clearly haven’t read a comic book. We then move on to Garfield’s portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man which is the most accurate portrayal of the character from the comics we’ve seen in the movie, with all the jokes and wise-cracks. Basically this is the closest we’ve come so far to seeing the comic book Peter Parker in a movie. And then there were all of the Easter eggs and references to characters such as Felicity Jone’s Black Cat and B.J. Novak’s Alistair Smythe as well as the Rhino appearance. As a fan of all things Spidey I relish seeing as much Spidey goodness in one film as possible!

2. It’s such a good-looking movie
It just simply cannot be overstated how good the CGI and special effects in this movie were. The fight scenes between Spider-Man and Jamie Foxx’s Electro literally lit up the screen with a myriad of awesome electrical effects, superb explosions, amazing slow-motion Spider-sense sequences and fantastic city-wide web-slinging. You may think that I’m being a bit haphazard with the superlatives but I promise you that it’s almost impossible to watch this film and not be mildly blown away by how some of the scenes looked. Never before has something as simple as seeing Spider-Man traverse around the city looked so amazing and been as enjoyable to watch as it was in the Amazing Spider-Man 2. So at the very least this film is impressive visually and that’s important when it comes to Spider-Man. Another massive plus point for the film visually was that a lot of the action took place during the daytime, which has been a running source of frustration in several Spider-Man films, that have previously been plunged into darkness far too often.

3. The Chemistry between Peter and Gwen
I will admit that the film is a bit cluttered, that the pacing seemed a bit off and that the disjointed appearance of the villains (especially the Green Goblin) marred the films potential somewhat but there’s absolutely no denying that the film’s saving grace was the on-screen chemistry between real life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone who truly lit up the movie as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. The performance these two give is so good that it almost makes up for everything else. I’m not even exaggerating. Emma Stone was so good as Gwen Stacy that the final moments of the film were made all the more shocking and that people are genuinely calling for her to return to the franchise as a clone of Gwen, as Mary Jane Watson, or someone else. Honestly you could watch the film for these two and nothing else.

4. The Sinister Six
I reckon I might be one of the few people in the world who is genuinely excited about a Sinister Six movie. I don’t particularly care if it’s a masterpiece or not, I don’t even care if it’s good. The Sinister Six are such a huge part of Spider-Man lore that it’s just amazing we’re going to see them in a movie at all. So if you get as giddily excited about the prospect of seeing the Sinister Six as I do then you’ll need to watch Amazing Spider-Man 2 which does a lot of the leg-work in introducing and forming the six-strong super-villain team. Yes, I’m recommending watching a whole movie purely on the basis of context and continuity for future films, but when the context and continuity is as enjoyable as Amazing Spider-Man 2 and seeing the Green Goblin and Rhino brought to life as well as teasers for the Vulture and Doctor Octopus it isn’t all that bad!

5. The bonus features and deleted scenes
Sure the deleted scenes were leaked online, and sure they were deleted so obviously they aren’t that important, but having seen them all I have to say that if you felt a little disappointed after watching Amazing Spider-Man 2 because you felt like certain things were missing or certain characters were underdeveloped then you will probably feel a lot better about the film after watching the deleted scenes, particularly towards Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin who is given an incredible amount of depth in the deleted scenes. Also there’s the behind-the-scenes videos which are like cat-nip to a movie geek like me!
But honestly it’s a good film and I promise most of you will enjoy if you sit back and try not to act like film critics for a couple of hours.
