Whatever a Spider Can’s All-New Ultimates #5 recap
By Daniel Wood
All-New Ultimates took a bit of a break last issue with the girls and boys splitting up. It was a bit of a non-event until the end when Diamondback and the rest of the Serpent Skulls murdered Bombshell’s boyfriend Poey and then brainwashed her with some special dust with the intention to use her to lure the rest of the All-New Ultimates into a trap. You can see the recap of All-New Ultimates #4 here, and then you can check out our review here.
But moving swiftly onto All-New Ultimates #5 the comic throws us straight into the action with Black Widow (Ultimate Spider-Woman), Kitty Pryde and Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales taking on an un-named gang. The trio remark that this gang isn’t the Serpent Skulls and it looks like they’ve already been in a fight (with the Serpent Skulls)
We then cut to Cloak and Dagger who are taking a time-out to spend some time with each other. Dagger is giving Cloak a message and reprimanding him for being too demanding. Cloak puts the stress down to being unable to successfully recover due to the heavy schedule. He then resolves that he and Dagger can take a break for the night and Cloak transports the two somewhere else.
We then see Diamondback and Crossbones with a mind-controlled Bombshell. After forcing her to get some cash out and joking about her dead drug-dealer boyfriend they discuss their plan which is to force Lana/Bombshell to take them to the Ultimates base. They lament that they couldn’t get any juicy secret identity information from her, obviously sewing up a plot-hole.
Detective Brigid O’Reilly turns up at Spider-Man, Black Widow and Kitty’s location. Brigid fills the superhero team in on the gang war that the Serpent Skulls started before passive aggressively suggesting that the superhero team do their bit to combat the threat from the Serpent Skulls because their hands aren’t tied. Brigid gets angry about the death of Terry (who we know isn’t dead and is roaming around the sewers somewhere) before the superheros get a page meaning they have to leave. Police informant and drug addict Bart tells Brigid where they are going before revealing that Cloak’s powers are forcing him to seek help and give up drugs.
All of the team apart from Bombshell arrive at the headquarters and they’re all thoroughly confused about why there were called there and where Bombshell is as her signal was coming from their location. A few of the lower level Serpent Skulls appear and start fighting one-on-one with each of the Ultimates. One of them insults Kitty, one of them references the weird relationship between Miles and Diamondback and one of them references Jessica Drew’s near-death experience. Crossbones gets frustrated and enters the fight.
We then cut to one of the other police officers Detective Brooks and Detective Dennis are in what appears to be Scourges hotel room. Scourge is hiding in a closet with a gun ready to kill the two officers when Brigid rings in a moment of divine intervention and calls for the officers to meet her at the All-New Ultimates church. We then head back to the church to see Crossbones giving the Ultimates a hard time.
We then see that Diamondback is controlling Lana and forcing her to use her explosive powers against her own team-mates as we see her targeting Cloak. Cobra turns up and talks about Poey, saying he dumped the body in a dumpster, Diamondback then once again insults Poey causing Lana to snap out of her Diamond Dust control and become enraged. Lana then obliterates the church causing the tower to collapse and everyone scatters ending the issue.
