ComiXology Adds More Publishers To DRM-Free Offerings

Maybe this DRM-free thing is going from an experiment to a trend.

ComiXology tested the waters back in July, offering DRM-free backups to purchases from six different publishers. This meant that users could download backup copies of books from these publishers and store them locally in PDF and CBZ file formats.

That program took the next logical step today, with ComiXology announcing that 14 more publishers would join in. Specifically, those publishers are:

  • IDW Publishing
  • Valiant Entertainment
  • Oni Press
  • Fantagraphics Books
  • Aspen Comics
  • Action Lab Entertainment
  • Th3rd World Studios
  • A Wave Blue World
  • Blind Ferret Entertainment
  • Caliber Comics
  • Creative Impulse Entertainment
  • Devils Due Entertainment
  • GT Labs Comics
  • Kingstone Media

It’s great to see more companies opting to go this route, as the customers buying digital comics via legitimate means are the people who probably least need to be worried about in terms of piracy. In August 2014, there were eight publishers with one percent of the total comics market share or more, and adding IDW and Valiant to Image and Dynamite means that half of them are on board.

Of course, without Marvel and DC (and to a lesser extent, Dark Horse), this can’t become a full-fledged tidal wave of change, but it’s still a positive trend. For more on how to take advantage of DRM-free backups, check out the FAQ page ComiXology has put together.
