Today Is National Comic Book Day, Apparently

You’ll have to excuse us for not bringing this up earlier. Bam Smack Pow didn’t exist last year at this time. Also, my calendar doesn’t have National Comic Book Day printed on it.

How did this become National Comic Book Day? Your guess is as good as ours. Even most comic book fanatics barely seem to know it exists.

Still, it seems a shame to have a holiday devoted to our favorite hobby/pastime/obsession and not do something to commemorate it. We’ll have to come up with our own traditions just like George and his family did for Festivus on Seinfeld. Come to think of it, Feats of Strength sounds like one we can just flat out steal.

Here’s another idea: maybe we just make Free Comic Book Day into National Comic Book Day as well. That’s an occasion we’ve all grown to know and anticipate, and if the turnout at my LCS every year is representative of how people rally around it everywhere, it’s a more proper celebration of the art form.

Plus, since no one is taking ownership of this holiday anyway, no one should be offended if we move it. What say you, comic book fans? Invent new traditions, or smash this holiday into the first Saturday in May?
