That rumor about Ethan Hawke playing the lead role in Doctor Strange that was circulating yesterday has been shot down.
Marc Graser of Variety did the honors on Twitter:
As interesting as the Ethan Hawke as Doctor Strange story may be, I'm told it's not true.

Spinoff Online reminds us that Hawke did work with Scott Derrickson on Sinister and enjoyed the experience, even saying he’d take a call from the director, but that’s apparently as far as the connection goes for now.
So that leaves us … where exactly? Is Marvel still thinking Joaquin Phoenix, or has the studio moved on to entirely new candidates? And why is Stephen Strange so difficult to cast anyway?
We’ll get someone in the Cloak of Levitation eventually, but until we do, we’re probably going to be sifting through even more rumors and have to wait a little longer for Marvel to put the film into place on the Marvel Cinematic Universe schedule.
