Sony and Disney in talks to allow Spider-Man to join Marvel’s cinematic universe?

Mere hours after I pretty much rubbish the idea that Spider-Man could be Captain America 3 a user on Reddit goes and makes me aware of what seems to be pretty legitimate news that maybe Spider-Man could be popping up in Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or maybe, just maybe, Marvel’s centerpiece, the Avengers. Me and my big mouth!

When I say ‘”legitimate news” I really mean that IGN have reported on rumours that came from Hitfix, a website that has a reputation for getting these kind of rumours right. The rumours state that Disney, who own Marvel’s cinematic universe, are currently in talks with Sony about allowing Spider-Man to appear in them at some point in the future. Now, this is indeed a very exciting rumour but it’s important to keep our feet on the ground. Let’s take a look at what’s actually been said.

"While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again."

That is a paragraph written by Drew McWeeny, a writer at Hitfix, who has suggested that he’s heard pretty solid rumours that some ‘very cool Spider-Man plans’ are being discussed. He also states himself that he’d love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening but as things stand he can’t verify the story and therefore this entire thing needs to be approached like any other wacky internet rumour – assume it’s not true until someone proves otherwise.
