Uncanny X-Men #27 Review: What Is Cyclops Up To?

The Uncanny X-Men are once again united on a last mission from Professor X, in the hope of righting a wrong that the late X-Men leader imposed on a very powerful mutant named Matthew Malloy.

As we saw in the last issue, Xavier, as part of his Last Will and Testament, sent the X-Men, co-led by Cyclops and Wolverine (who clearly has not died yet!), to deal with the Omega-Level mutant who has already destroyed a town in South Carolina.

Uncanny X-Men #27-Matthew Malloy

Needless to say, things do not go well for our not-so-merry mutants and their allies from SHIELD.  Malloy sees through Rachel Grey’s mental powers, and then shows just how powerful he truly is.  The SHIELD helicarrier transporting Maria Hill and the X-Men is destroyed, and Malloy transports all of the X-Men away from the scene.  Of the mutants we see transported, all are returned to where they began this adventure.  Cyclops is plopped into the snow of his rebel school in Canada, while Storm and most of the others are returned to the X-Men’s mansion in New York.  Ah, but where is Wolverine?  No one seems to know, and whatever happens to Logan is happening off-panel, as we really do not know.  (Of course, if you are following the Death of Wolverine story in his own books, you get the idea that this was his last adventure with the X-Men in this lifetime).

Clearly, force and deception will not work in reining in this powerful new mutant.  Cyclops, ever the clever tactician, comes up with an unusual, but equally dangerous plan…which we will not disclose here, since you should go out and buy this book!

Uncanny X-Men #27-Cyclops In Snow

This latest installment of the ongoing saga of how the X-Men deal with the death of Xavier, and the still-raw schism that split the team, this book has more action in it than the last few issues, though the dialogue from Brian Michael Bendis stilll delivers.  This writer knows his X-Men, and is one of the best at writing each of them in character. As we have seen in the recent X-Men storylines, it all comes down to choices made and pathways taken and not taken.

What happens in the next issue will go a long way to telling us if Cyclops’ plan of action is wise or foolish.  Either way, Bendis has served up a good story and a cliff-hanger on what happens next.  Looking forward to the next issue of Uncanny X-Men!
