Could We Be Getting More Vertigo Movies Besides The Sandman?
By Nick Tylwalk
Unless you’re in the camp that believes The Sandman shouldn’t even be attempted on film, you no doubt breathed a sigh of relief when its creator, Neil Gaiman, squashed any rumors about its movie adaptation once again being in trouble just because it wasn’t included in last week’s Warner Bros. announcement concerning upcoming movies based on DC Comics characters.
It’s a Vertigo series, after all, and apparently that is an important distinction when it comes to getting it to the big screen.
Could we see more from DC’s moodier, less super-powered imprint than just the story of the Endless? We’re getting into the business of parsing quotes now, which is always a tricky one, but check out Gaiman’s exact quote about The Sandman (from his own Tumblr blog) and you’ll see why it’s worth considering:
"It’s not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement."
Taken as literally as possible, that makes it sound like there’s going to be a separate announcement at some point and that there is more than one Vertigo movie in the works. Spinoff Online mentions that Fables and 100 Bullets are possibilities, and given the climate of TV and pop culture in general, the former seems like it would have a great chance for success.
Preacher and Y: The Last Man often come up in movie or TV talk, but the imprint as a whole has an impressive number of possibilities when it comes to possible films. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Gaiman was speaking hopefully or with some knowledge of projects that haven’t been revealed just yet.
