Wonder Woman Won’t Force Marvel Into Female Super Hero Movie, But …
By Nick Tylwalk
Is the recent announcement of a Warner Bros./DC Wonder Woman movie going to accelerate any plans Marvel might have had to do a movie where a female super hero is the lead?
Apparently not, according to Victoria Alonso. She’s an executive producer and the executive VP of visual effects & post-production for Marvel, and she gave a predictably confident answer when Variety talked to her about whether or not DC might force Marvel’s hand in making a female super hero the star of her own movie:
"We have so much pressure internally for everything we do, we don’t need outside pressure. We are always so hard on ourselves."
That doesn’t mean Alonso wouldn’t like to see it happen, saying, “”If it were up to me, it would be today.” That’s obviously not in the cards, as Marvel’s slate for 2015 and 2016 — or would be, if Doctor Strange ever finds its leading man.
After that, though, who knows? There are clearly spots in the release calendar that aren’t set in stone, or even pencilled in, for that matter. Much of the focus of speculation has been about a Black Widow film since she’s already established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the company is feeling its oats enough right now that it might like it can launch a female hero into her own movie without needing any set-up first.
Right now it’s more a matter of when than if for this to happen. Warner has Wonder Woman positioned f0r 2017, and Sony is reportedly toying with the idea of a female-led super hero movie over the next few years as well. If Marvel thinks there’s an opportunity there, it will surely make it happen, though maybe it feels like being first isn’t as important as doing it right.
